Bobcats use fourth quarter run to down Celtics

Basketball Betting Lines

03/22/2007 - Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Raymond Felton scored 19 points, dished out five assists and had three steals, and Charlotte used an 18-0 run in the fourth quarter en route to defeating the Boston Celtics, 92-84, at TD Banknorth Garden.

Matt Carroll chipped in with 15 points, and Alan Anderson came off the bench to score 14 for the Bobcats, who have won four of their last six games and won in Boston for the first time in franchise history.

Gerald Wallace finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Brevin Knight donated 10 points and pulled down eight boards for Charlotte, which snapped a season-high seven-game losing streak on the road.

Paul Pierce scored 23 points for Boston, which has lost five of its last seven games. Pierce left the game with a mouth injury with 4:02 remaining in the third quarter and did not return. Al Jefferson chipped in with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Kendrick Perkins finished with 13 points and also cleared 11 boards.

With his team trailing by 15 at the break, Felton's jump shot made it a 10- point game with 7:47 remaining in the third stanza, but Boston attempted to pull away.

Pierce's turnaround jumper gave the Celtics a 66-51 cushion at 5:11, but the Bobcats later closed with a 6-0 run and trailed 71-62 heading to the fourth.

Charlotte then took control with an 18-0 run in the final stanza. Walter Herrmann's layup at 8:56 started the spurt, and Carroll's jumper with 6:10 remaining gave the Bobcats the lead, 75-74. Knight followed with a driving layup to extend the margin to three.

Felton's trey made it a six-point cushion for the Bobcats, and Carroll capped the spurt with a pair from the stripe to extend it to eight, 82-74, with 3:37 remaining in the contest.

The Celtics never got closer than five the rest of the way, and Knight closed out the game with a pair of free throws for the final margin.

The Bobcats held a 7-6 lead early on, but a pair of free throws by Perkins ignited an 11-4 run by the Celtics.

Jefferson's jumper made it 19-15 in favor of Boston, which scored 12 of the next 18 points and led 31-19 at the end of the first quarter.

Charlotte reversed its fortune with a 10-5 burst to open the second, pulling within five, 34-29, at 9:28. Boston stormed back however, and held a 42-29 edge with 6:02 remaining in the first half.

Wallace converted on one of two from the charity stripe to pull Charlotte within nine, but the Celtics padded their lead down the stretch and led 54-39 at intermission.

Game Notes

Big 12 Conference betting odds

Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State

Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.

Work left to do:

Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.

Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.

Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
